The government has announced plans to construct a new state-of-the-art terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to ease congestion and increase efficiency.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the airport has stretched its capacity to serve passengers, leading to inefficiencies and breakdown in systems.
“Being a key port of entry for Kenya, it is critical that we work on a Public-Private Partnership model that will facilitate the expansion of JKIA to include a new terminal and a new runway to double the airport’s capacity and move the list of the best airports in the world,” Murkomen noted.
He added: “With the terminal comes the increased capacity to handle more planes and passengers, hundreds of jobs for Kenyans, a boost in tourism, increased trade and investment and enhanced regional integration.”
The cabinet secretary spoke on Friday during the inauguration of the newly-appointed Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board of Directors.
Murkomen urged the new KAA team to work closely with the government, relevant stakeholders, and investors to realize the establishment of the modern terminal.
He also wants the board to review systems and protocols in order to boost both physical and cyber security at JKIA and other airports in the country.
The Kenyan government is targeting over 25 million passengers annually by 2025 on the expansion of JKIA’s terminals.
JKIA boasts over 40 passenger airlines and 25 cargo airlines and is the busiest airport in East Africa.

It’s called stimulating the economy.Yes you construct;you erect buildings, bridges roads, brothels, bars, highclass funeral homes. And in the process, the chains that link the government to contractors have to be greased properly,or else the weak links will break, and the whole process might go down the drain. We dont want that do we?
Even to build a house of God where the servant of God does not pay tax, for the church to lift off it’s foundation palm greasing has to take place. It is the illegal cost of doing business.A necessary evil, unfortunately.Yes when asked, most of us agree that we should not bribe or take bribes. We even pass laws against the practice yet its ramphant.Strange.
