Chebukati Threatens to Sue Raila Over Bribery, Secret Visit Claims

Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has threatened legal action against Azimio leader Raila Odinga over claims that he asked for a bribe.

On Sunday, Odinga claimed Chebukati and former IEBC commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye visited his house seeking facilitation to rig the August 9th, 2022 election in his favor.

“Chebukati is saying there are people who tried to bribe him, even his other colleagues Guliye and Molu. I want to ask them what they came to do in my house. What did they ask me for?”

“I have pictures to confirm this, if they deny I will unleash them. They asked me for something and I have evidence to that effect,” Odinga said, adding that it was after he refused to bulge that they gifted President Ruto victory.

But in a demand letter drafted by Saroni and Stevens Advocates, Chebukati gave Odinga seven days to produce evidence backing his claims.

“Our Client reacted with shock and consternation at your allegation—which you know too well to be false and malicious. Our Client is aggrieved that the said allegation has the unconstitutional purpose and effect of lowering his dignity, and injuring his reputation among the right-minded persons in society,” reads the letter in part.

 “In response to your allegations, our Client vehemently denies your allegation that he met you during the election year, let alone the election period, and in particular, at your house as alleged by yourself.”

Chebukati’s lawyers say their client has suffered serious reputation injuries from the statements made by Odinga.

“Our Client is aggrieved that you took no caution or responsibility while making the adverse remarks with the consequence that our Client has suffered and continues to suffer serious reputational injury, taking into account his status and position as former Chairman of IEBC,” the letter adds.

The lawyers want him to produce evidence of Chebukati’s visit to his home, failure to which they shall take legal action.

“Our instructions are to demand from you, as of right, which we hereby do, to be furnished with the alleged video footage within seven days from the date hereof. Kindly take notice that if we do not receive the video footage demanded hereinabove, within the Demand Period, we shall be constrained to institute appropriate adverse but lawful proceedings against you,” they add.
