Kenyan Doctors Issue a 30-Day Strike Notice

Kenyan doctors have issued a 30-day strike notice citing the government’s failure to honor their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Addressing the media on Monday, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah said the CBA medics signed with county and national governments in 2017 was yet to be implemented.

The union also said the government has not promoted doctors, employed new medics, nor supplied medical equipment required by doctors as agreed in the CBA.

“We see extreme shortage of doctors, there are no specialists. We have over 5000 doctors who have not been employed,” Atellah said.

Consequently, the doctors said they will down their tools in January 2023 if their concerns are not addressed immediately.

“We have written letters trying to have actions from National and County governments. By the time we have given notice of intend of industrial action, we have exhausted all the available avenues. An agreement that has been signed by the state has to be honored,” the union said.

KMPDU is demanding that a Health Service Commission is established within 100 days and that doctors under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program are employed on permanent and pensionable terms.

  1. I know in most industrial…
I know in most industrial disputes the devil is in the details but if what Dr. Davji Attelah is say is true: “The government has not promoted doctors, employed new medics, nor supplied medical equipment required by doctors as agreed in the CBA”, then they have legitimate reasons to pressure the government. Where is Atwoli in all of this?

“The government has not promoted doctors, employed new medics, nor supplied medical equipment required by doctors as agreed in the CBA”. Those sound like very legitimate reasons to pressure the government.

Ruto is talking about expanding the SGR to Malava via Naivasha. Please shelve that plan. This is an emergency. What is critical here;Carrying people around or keeping them alive?
I think law makers will shape up and do their work if a law is passed that states,” No Kenyan shall leave the country for a treatment that could be performed within the country.”
From the look of things,it appears that the government reneged on its promise. This is not good. What kind of people are running this government, that they cannot see that the health of wananchi should be paramount?Yes you heard it from the horse’s mouth”WE SEE EXTREME SHORTAGES OF DOCTORS”.This is one reason why some diaspora are reluctant to relocate back to Kenya.

  4. There is no excuse by hungry…
There is no excuse by hungry billionaire Kenyans to fail to settle the health care workers if they(Kenyans) can afford to finance 48 useless governments.Salaries paid to non-performing 94 governors & deputies,411 MPs/senators,2400 councilors and private political parties is enough to double the pay for these most essential employees.Who does not know the political class are paid billions for looting?

  5. Cannot force a corrupt…
Cannot force a corrupt government to absorb 5000 doctors who insist on permanent payment and a pension. Some are lucky to have private clinics they can fall back on not the regular unemployed graduate. This government has other priorities furthermore when they get sick they simply use your taxes to seek medical attention abroad. The more things “change “ the more they remain the same.
