Two People Killed After a Six-Storey Unfinished Building Collapses in Ruaka

Two people have been confirmed dead after the collapse of a six-storey building at Joyland area in Ruaka, Kiambu County, on Thursday.

The two, a husband and wife, were killed when the building under construction crushed their residential home at around 5 a.m., trapping them in the rubble.

Another adjacent building was also damaged but did not collapse and all the occupants were rescued.

Confirming the incident, Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said authorities are looking for the owner of the building as investigations continue.

The incident comes two days after a seven-storey building under construction collapsed at Seasons area in Kasarani, Nairobi, killing three people.

The National Construction Authority (NCA) said the building was non-compliant and its officials had inspected the building just a few hours before it collapsed at 2.20 p.m. on Monday.

“Construction was ongoing when our officers inspected and fault was noticed at the columns. The building was not compliant & arrests had been made,” NCA said on Wednesday.

The authority said it had made three arrests from the project, and that there was no registered constructor on the site during inspection.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the owner of the building will be charged with murder, saying he did not have a building permit nor any other documents for the project.

“The developer must be charged in court. We will liaise with DCI to he needs to be charged with murder. All those who are going with such constructions, we want to put them on notice, just pull down those buildings or let us come for you,” he stated.

A residential building under construction collapses every other month in Kenya. When you look at the rubble, the way those bricks are separated, is a sign that nothing was holding them together. Someone is cutting corner somewhere. It’s no coincidence that so many buildings are going down like this. You never hear building collapse in wealthy parts of Kenya like Karen or kilimani. It’s always in low income divisions.

The government needs to crack down on the city officials who do the inspections and jail them, these cases are part and puzzle of how corruption operates.

This what happens when a country decides corruption is the way of life, this country stinks corruption, we elect corrupt leaders so that money can trickle down to the poor, what a twisted logic. How can we elect person notorious for corruption to be our president? The deputy is no better, he could not explain to a court of law how he obtained 200M! Which was forfeited to the state. The governors MCA and the county assemblies are also catching up to the way of doing business. We are a very stupid people, let the suffering continue, sababu ujinga ndiyo tumejaza kwa kichwa.
