National Treasury Principal Secretary (PS) nominee Chris Kiptoo has revealed that he is worth an estimated Sh338 million, accrued from immovable assets including land and houses.
Appearing before the National Assembly Finance Committee on Monday for vetting, Kiptoo also listed salary, financial market, and farming business as his sources of income.
“I have two houses one which I bought while working at Central Bank of Kenya and the other I bought while working as the Principal Secretary for Trade and Environment. I have also bought parcels of land back at home,” he told MPs.
Kiptoo, who served as the PS for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in former President Uhuru’s administration, also mentioned that he anticipates his current income from gratuity and pension.
The nominee previously worked at the Office of the Prime Minister, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA), the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
If cleared for the position, Kiptoo told the committee that his main goal will be to broaden the tax base in a strategy that will not hurt hustlers by increasing the tax burden.
“To increase the tax base without hurting hustlers, we need to have a structured conversation with KRA on how to. We will engage with professionals in KRA on how to broaden the tax base without hurting businesses and tax payers,” he said.
“If this committee approves me to be the PS, in the national Treasury I want to assure Kenyans that I will deal with the issues of wastage of resources, for example, foreign trips by public servants will be frozen.”
Kiptoo is among the 51 individuals nominated as Principal Secretaries in various State departments by President Ruto.
