Customs officials at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday arrested six female suspects attempting to smuggle USD$857,300 (Sh103.6 million) from India.
The six women of Somali origin arrived at the airport from India aboard Ethiopian airline flight Number ET318 and the cash was discovered after customs officials scanned the luggage in their possession, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) said in a statement on Friday.
The suspects are Hafsa Warsame Kuresha, Abdi Hassan Arfon, Abdi Farah Sarah, Ahmen Omar, Hassan Habiba Abdi and Hodhan Mohammed.
“On 6th October 2022, while clearing Ethiopian Airline flight Number ET 318, some six women of Somali origin arrived at the Customs area. They had with them luggage containing shoes and clothes. As usual, the bags were scanned to establish what they contained,” KRA said.
“The images showed items that looked like currency. Upon secondary verification, it was confirmed that the luggage contained us currency amounting to 857,300USD.”
The intercepted cash has since been deposited into the customs warehouse pending further investigations.
Earlier this year, a Bahraini national was also arrested at JKIA with Sh110 million in a suspected money laundering plot. KRA said the passenger identified as Khalid Jameel Saeed was planning to take a flight to his country through Egyptian Airline.
Jameel was intercepted by KRA officials following intelligence shared by Financial Report Centre (FRC) that the passenger had made several attempts to deposit the currency in a bank.
