Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition deputy presidential candidate Martha Karua says they will accept the Supreme Court’s decision on the presidential election petition.
Speaking at a burial ceremony in Meru County on Friday, Karua stated that they desired to keep peace, but in order to do so, justice has to be served.
“You are all aware that there is a case at the Supreme Court where we are seeking the truth about what happened. Our Constitution stipulates that if one is dissatisfied with the results, they have to seek legal redress and that is what we did,” said Karua.
She added: “When the verdict is out, we all respect that. We want to maintain peace but for this to be achieved there must be justice because peace without justice is not sustainable.”
Together with Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga, Karua filed a petition to the apex challenging the outcome of the August 9th election where UDA’s William Ruto was declared the winner.
In their petition, the two allege that IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati failed to tally around 140,000 votes and that Ruto did not meet the constitutional threshold of 50% plus one of the valid votes cast, a requirement for him to be declared the winner in round one.
They want the court to nullify the election and order the electoral commission to conduct a fresh election in strict conformity with the constitution and other election laws.
The hearing of the petition by a seven-judge bench concluded on Friday, with the court expected to issue a ruling on Monday.
