Raila Chides Ruto for Wooing Azimio Leaders to Kenya Kwanza

Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga has castigated president-elect William Ruto for engaging in what he terms as acts of impunity and disregard of the rule of law.

In a statement issued by his presidential campaign secretariat spokesperson Prof. Makau Mutua, Odinga said Ruto was “assiduously wooing some of the leaders elected as independents and on the Azimio coalition to defect to his side.”

“This is the practice that was used in the KANU era to defeat the independence of the legislature and retard the growth of multiparty democracy,” reads the statement.

Odinga stated that no Azimio constituent party has formally invoked the process of leaving the coalition hence any purported defections at this time are null and void.

“Mr. Ruto preaches water but drinks wine. He ought to know democracy requires vibrant pluralism in which different political parties compete on issues. Attempts to cannibalize Azimio by corrupting its members will not succeed,” he said.

“The law that led to the formation of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya — and its Deed of Agreement — set out the ground rules and conditions under which members can exit the coalition. There are clear guidelines. Mr. Ruto should know that it is illegal for him, or others, to induce members to purport to leave Azimio.”

Odinga further urged Ruto to wait for the outcome of their court petition challenging the results of the 2022 presidential election, expressing confidence at emerging the victor.

“Mr. Ruto should not be allowed to take this country back to the old days of KANU dictatorship. He needs to stop engaging in the culture of political corruption. We know he wants to create propaganda to give the impression that he is the inevitable victor. The court will be the final arbiter on who won this election, and we are confident that we won it,” the statement added.

“Why has Mr. Ruto panicked and resorted to illegal and corrupt conduct in violation of the law? It can only be because he has sensed defeat.”

The statement comes after leaders from the United Democratic Movement (UDM), a constituent party of Azimio, ditched the coalition and joined Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance.

Ruto also received a section of leaders who were elected on independent tickets into Kenya Kwanza, among them 10 Members of Parliament and one governor.

Handshake brought stability in the government since the Deputy President became part of the opposition.
Now he is President -Elect. Question is elected by who after he stole votes from Raila? It is not over until it is actually over.

Mugikuyu stability my foot! They brought hunger and poverty. They combined forces to steal from the coffers since there wasn’t a watchdog. At this moment there’s a 4 trillion deficit that was created some three years ago and that cannot be explained.
The skirmishes that was seen after elections were a direct incitement from the the same leaders.
And whoever does it has to face a court of law. Kenya is a nation that does not belong to regional kingpins.
The constitution dictates one president at a time. It doesn’t matter even if you lost by 2 votes.

  3. Wait a minute- you claim…
Wait a minute- you claim that you “won the election”! By your warped up logic it is safe to say those people are “defecting to the opposition” and hence kudos to H.E. Ruto for “strengthening the opposition” There seem to be so many mad people in Kenya of late. The president elected on jubilee party defected to ODM and claimed that he was “bringing unity”. He chose an opposition candidate over his own party candidate- Via handshake he “bought all opposition” gave them all leadership positions in parliament and removed all those who busted their rear working for his election- was that ok? If yes , shut up and swallow your own pills. You can also use that as one ground to reject results at SCK- All you have is garbage math that should go on record for dumbness. By the way , how did the insane “4 I doubt they can count how many they are” get to know about 100.01% tally since they talked before Kenyans/ Hon. Chebukati released the results???? As a math literate I have figured out how they got the 0.01% thing- Some dummy math man (azimio prof. most likely) calculated that that if H. E. Ruto lost 1% = 0.01 of the votes then 50.49%- 1% = 49.49% hence re-run demand. Then “Eureka” they saw the rounding error of 0.01% and thought it is equivalent to their magic 1% = 142,000 thingi! So dumb are the azimio professors that they think if you made a “mistake” in percent tally then “it creates extra 142000 vote/rs” At this rate our universities should be closed by UNESCO. If a percent is wrong- go back to the totals and recalculate- the total votes cannot be changed to “fit a percent” except by kenyan “professors”.

Thank you @Francis for refreshing the stale minds above, and elsewhere. Raila left the opposition with a handshake n the nation was left without the necessary watchdog.. What Ruto is doing is exactly the same… Reading between the lines, Raila wants a Ruto to call it a handshake..and who gets all the goodies again?….the one and only one, RAO…. He’ll catwalk to the other side lifting his middle finger to his 48% followers.

The lifeblood of politics is power and it is not how you acquire it that matters, it is the fact that you acquire it. Hate him or love him but Ruto has proven to be a paka mjanja in Kenya politics. What is either good or bad is, he is still a fairly young man who will be in politics for quite some time and he will either make or destroy Kenya or the nation will turn against him if he steals too much which is expected.

@Simon, Rao,and his coalition are complaining that Ruto is wooing members from his coalition. To me this means that the coalition is not all that unified.Raila should not complain. He should look at those”defecting “as disloyal partners he does not need. How about that?
Anyway, the bigger complain from team Raila is that Ruto in doing so, he is flagrantly breaking the law.I am not sure about that…Besides that,if these small parties decide on their own,for their own interest, and benefit to join Ruto, Raila would still blame Ruto. Its convenient.

Weak minds sell such narratives as WSR= Moi. It’s a bad dream. It’s only those that dwell on tribal hatred that think this way. WSR is a different animal. Take it to the bank. In the the next few years I’m sure you will vote him in for a second term if your tribal mental thinking attitude will have changed.

  10. In 2018 Raila, an official…
In 2018 Raila, an official government opposition party leader, and who gets paid for the role Ksh 250 million every year for the job, decided to join the Jubilee party. This was done through handshake. Either way you can also say Uhuru being the head of jubilee joint Odm.
The opposition party’s responsibility came to a halt then until the August 9 2022. Odm nor Jubilee complaint about the government forgoing the tendency of one party state. What changed today?
It’s it NOT Ruto wooing the opposition members but the opposition members through their way of right of association are choosing their own destiny. It’s their right under the constitution and no party laws are more supreme than their basic rights.
What is in public domain is the fact that Ruto is keeping the rightful opposition in their space.

        @ Asista:
