Gladys Wanga has won the Homa Bay gubernatorial election, making history as the first female governor in the Nyanza region which has six counties.
The immediate former Homa Bay Woman Representative was declared the winner of the election after garnering 244,559 votes, trouncing former Nairobi governor Evans Kidero who managed 154,182 votes.
Wanga, who contested on an ODM party ticket, led in seven out of eight constituencies in the county while Kidero, who vied as an independent candidate, won in Homa Bay Town constituency with a 2,000 vote margin. Mark Raudi of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party came third with 1,244 votes.
“To our worthy competitors, we ask that now that the election is over we should keep it behind us. You had an agenda for Homa Bay, we had an agenda as well. Let’s come together, let’s work together and serve the people of Homa Bay,” Wanga said in her acceptance speech.
“To the people of Homa Bay, it doesn’t matter if you voted for us or not, let us move the county to the next level together.”
