Two Hospitalized After a Fight Between Kenyan and Korean Workers at Konza City

Two people were on Saturday hospitalized and several others injured following a fight between Kenyan and Korean workers at a construction site in Konza City, Machakos County.

Confirming the incident after visiting the site, University Education and Research Principal Secretary Simon Nabukwesi said the two were unconscious when they were rushed to the hospital while several others were treated and discharged.

The victims are part of a group working on the Sh16 billion Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) which is being undertaken by Korean company BOMI Consortium.

It is alleged that Kenyan workers hired by BOMI Consortium were attacked by Korean workers on the same project but the cause of the altercation remains unclear.

Nabukwesi says the project’s completion date of September 2023 appears untenable due to some issues that have plagued it, including communication barriers between the Korean workers and their Kenyan counterparts.

He claims that none of the Korean employees can speak English and appear to be unqualified, in breach of the contract that required English proficiency.

“According to their contract, they were all required to be English speakers, but none of them speak in English making it hard for them to communicate with their Kenyan counterparts,” Nabukwesi told reporters.

“Tumeona hata kwamba hawajasoma vizuri na tumewaambia wakubwa wao huko Korea wawaondoea ili waweze kuleta wengine wanaofahamu kazi vizuri.”

He also accused the Korean contractor of failing to subcontract the project to local companies as required by law.

“Hawa wanataka kujifanyia hao wenyewe, hawajatafuta kampuni za Kenya ambazo zinatakiwa kutekeleza asilimia 49 ya mradi kama huu kulingana na mkataba wa kazi.

Lakini wao wamesema wanaajiri wakenya na kuwalipa pesa ambayo wao wameamua,” he added.

The PS said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are probing alleged discrimination, adding that those found guilty will face charges.

    • The Ching Chong you are…
The Ching Chong you are talking about is being sponsored by Kenya’s untouchables! Even these same Koreans will be here to stay and finish up their jobs! How do you think they get here? Corruption by the Kenya’s untouchables – they share the profits. Every foreign company working in Kenya is “ sponsored” by a Kenyan or Kenya’s company!

I just want to know how Kenyans faired in this wrestling match. In other words it was a battle of Githeri and Ugali vs barbecued dog, snakes and frogs.

Why not send them packing and lock up the criminal ones at the same time?

Honestly speaking, dealing with Kenyan contractors is pure stress and unproductive! They like shortcuts, they steal construction materials hata cement inapitishwa across a perimeter fence in a matter of seconds!! I am talking through experience here, I am not biased!

    Kenya is a corrupt country!

I lived in South Korea for a period of 16 months. Koreans are the most racist group of people on the face of the earth. They hate black people with a burning passion. I do not understand why Koreans have to be brought to kenya to do a construction project.

They also like to use physical force to fight blacks in their own country. I am not surprised they started a fight with those black Kenyans workers. The Koreans call black people monkeys. They may have missed “Kiugugi” (dog meat) which caused them to act irrationally.

I served one year in S. Korea as a US Army soldier and my experience was 100% of what you have described. I felt at home in Seoul,Itaewon,Inchon,or Uijongbhu than I feel in most parts of Kenya.

Also, Korean is very dirty place. Nairobi is like heaven to them.

The sewer system there sticks like crazy. They all wear face mask every where because of the sewerage smells. They live is stuck up old shacks especially in the city of Souel.

I dont think Korean is the place to get laborers to build in kenya.

  6. Kudos to the Kenyan workers…
Kudos to the Kenyan workers especially for standing up to these dog eaters.Maybe one of them attempted to “whip” a local and forgot he was not on “home turf” and preferential treatment does not exist among the locals where they have no problem dispensing mob justice and kangaroo courts are the order of the day. Those complaining about Kenyan contractors when you are sending money si hata unaweza kuimport your “american contractors” waku jengee .As with everything else you get what you paid for.

    • Koreans will eat every dog…
Koreans will eat every dog and cat alive. That could have been the source of the fight because dogs may have started disappearing around Koza City!
