Detectives in Nairobi are detaining two suspects accused of defrauding tens of Kenyan job seekers of their hard-earned money.
Nicholas Chomba and Anthony Mwangi are said to have conned the victims unspecified amount of money on the pretext that they would help them secure jobs at the Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), a specialized maritime force based in Mombasa.
The two are alleged to have committed the offenses on diverse dates between April 3rd and June 8th, 2022, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Police said the two placed advertisements on social media inviting applicants to send their job applications and even prepared offer letters to some of the ‘successful’ applicants.
Several fake recruitment forms bearing KCGS logos, pictures and vital information regarding the service were recovered following their arrest.
Different messages and Mpesa transactions from unsuspecting Kenyans were retrieved from the suspects’ mobile phone sim cards to help in investigations. Those seeking jobs were asked to pay for medical, interview and uniform fees.
“Members of the public are advised that there is no ongoing recruitment by Kenya Coast Service at the moment,” cautioned DCI.
The two suspects will be charged with obtaining money by false pretense contrary to Section 313 of the Penal Code.
