Court Freezes Sh278 Million Unexplained Assets Held by Former KRA Officer

The High Court has ordered the freezing of unexplained wealth worth Sh287 million held by former Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officer Jeremiah Kamau Kinyua.

Justice Esther Maina issued the order following an application filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) which argues that Kinyua’s wealth is not proportionate to his known sources of income.

The agency says it has reasons to believe that Kinyua, who worked at KRA for a period of 15 years before resigning in March last year, amassed the massive wealth through corruption between 2012 and 2020.

Some of the properties targeted by EACC include a vehicle, 12 parcels of land in Ruiru, Kiambu County, five plots in Githunguri, Kiambu County, a piece of land in Laikipia, and another plot in Nairobi.

Documents filed in court show that Kinyua was employed at the tax authority as a graduate trainee on January 28th, 2005, and was later promoted to a supervisor in the domestic taxes department where he worked until he resigned in March this year.

His net salary between 2012 and 2021 was Sh11.6 million, according to EACC.
