Lamu politician Abdirashid Mwaura has been arrested for allegedly disrupting Deputy President William Ruto’s political rally.
Abdirashid, who is eyeing the Lamu West parliamentary seat in the August 9th elections, was picked by police from Ruto’s meeting in Hindi, Lamu County on Friday.
Confirming the arrest, Lamu OCPD Geoffrey Osanane said the politician is being held at Hindi police station awaiting arraignment on Monday.
Osanane said Abdirashid, who is affiliated with the Raila Odinga-led Azimio La Umoja coalition, will face at least four charges, including resisting arrest and causing interference.
Ruto is touring Lamu to drum up support for his presidential bid ahead of the forthcoming elections and has promised to address land issues bedeviling the county if he ascends to power.
He is accompanied by his Kenya Kwanza alliance co-principals Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang’ula as well as MPs Aden Duale (Garissa Township), Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), Athman Shariff (Lamu East), Benjamin Tayari (Kinango) and Anwar Loitiptip (Lamu).
