NYS Storekeeper Questioned over the Source of His Sh200 Million Wealth, Three Luxury Cars

A National Youth Service (NYS) storekeeper was on Monday put to task to explain how he acquired three luxury vehicles as well as property worth over Sh200 million in Ruiru Kiambu County.

David Mbogo Muthee, who has worked at NYS for 16 years, appeared before anti-corruption Magistrate Eunice Kagure as a witness in the Sh226.9 million NYS scam case.

Mbogo told the court that he acquired the property as well as a Lexus, Range Rover, and Toyota Prado through his genuine business.

He was testifying in a case in which former Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Lilian Omollo and 30 others have been charged with corruption charges relating to the NYS scandal.

During a cross-examination by the defense counsel, Mbogo denied ever coming into contact with local purchase orders (LPOs) or any account documents while working as a storekeeper at NYS.

He told the magistrate that on May 23rd, 2018 he received a call from one Mula of DCI headquarters to record a statement in respect of an LPO book series 2581851 to 2581900.

Mbogo also said that on April 5th, 2016 Evans Kundu from NYS called him and requested that when he travels to Nairobi to visit his family, he could pass by the college accountant’s office to pick up a document for him.

“On April 6th, 2016, I passed by Kagiri’s office who confirmed to me that he had been requested by Kundu for an LPO and that the commandant had authorized for the issuance of the same,” Mbogo said.

He divulged that Kagiri recorded the issuance of the said LPO in the counterfoil receipt book register (CRB) and indicated who was to pick it.

“Upon arrival at the NYS headquarters I met Mr. Kundu in his office where I gave him the book which was sealed by Kagiri and proceeded to see my family,” said Mbogo.

Other suspects in the case include businesswoman Anne Ngirita, her two sisters, and former NYS employees.
