Mama Ngina Breaks Silence on 2022 Succession Politics, Uhuru’s Fallout with Ruto

Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta has weighed in on the 2022 succession politics. 

Speaking at a burial ceremony in Gatundu South, Kiambu County on Tuesday, Mama Ngina appealed to the people of Mt Kenya to follow President Kenyatta’s political direction, saying he has the best interests of the country at heart and cannot mislead Kenyans.

Mama Ngina, who is President Kenyatta’s mother, made the comments during the burial of Nelly Wanjiku, mother of Bishop Ernest Karanja in Kafangi village.

“And your leader cannot lead you on the path that is not good for you. I tell you, he who sits on a tree stump knows what the ants eat,” she said.

The 88-year-old former first lady also appeared to blame Deputy President William Ruto for his fallout with President Kenyatta, saying the former showed “ill intentions and disrespect.”

“He (Uhuru) had no problem with his deputy, but if your deputy shows ill intentions and disrespect would you bother with him or carry on? Where he (Uhuru) shows you, please follow that direction,” she added.

She also called for peace and unity ahead of the August 9th general elections, and castigated a section of leaders who are insulting others.

“Those who are insulting others, we will let them be, maybe the insults are informed by how they were raised. Let us try to love one another in our country and drive the country’s affairs forward, and be aware of where you are headed,” she said.

President Kenyatta has endorsed ODM leader Raila Odinga as his preferred successor, saying he has the ability to unite the country, fight corruption, and continue making Kenya a respected nation across the world.
