Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Moi International Airport have been ranked the best airports in Africa for the second year in a row.
The two largest airports in the country were feted by the Airports Council International (ACI) for their exemplary customer service.
JKIA bagged the 2021 Best Airport by Size and Region award for the category of African airports handling between five and 15 million passengers annually.
Moi International Airport in Mombasa won the 2021 Best Airport by Size and Region award in the category of African airports handling below 2 million passengers per year.
The awards were based on ACI’s Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Survey, the world’s leading airport customer experience measurement and benchmarking program.
The survey captures passengers’ experience at all airport passenger contact points at more than 300 airports around the world.
ACI World director-general Luis Felipe de Oliveira commended Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) for its efforts in improving the passenger experience at the two airports.
“Your customers have spoken and recognized the successful efforts of your team in providing a superior customer experience during these difficult times,” Oliveira said.
“As the industry recovers, continuing to listen and adapt to travelers will be absolutely crucial to strengthening airports’ competitive advantage, non-aeronautical revenue, and ensuring the sustained recovery of the entire aviation ecosystem.”
KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari reiterated the authority’s commitment to continue providing a seamless passenger experience at its airports.
“We are truly delighted that for the second year running, our two main airports have been awarded by ACI for the efforts made in delivering improved customer experience in a safe and secure environment,” Gitari noted.

What a freaking joke, total insult, was in Nairobi in May after 11 years hiatus, upon entering the airport, the smell of dirty bathroom was overwhelming, I could smell the nasty smell all the way to the immigration que. On my departure I went upstairs to the American fast-food Hardees, the burger was garbage and fries were soggy and oily. Everything about JKIA is nasty,20 different mediocre inspection, idiotic question from the fake visa/customs official, next time I came back will be in 30 years maybe the dust from the endless construction will be over.
I had the same experience as…
I had the same experience as you visiting Nairobi after 16 years in 2018.JKIA was crowded, dirty toilets, outdated and poor facilities not sure how the airport received an award.
