Nominated Senator Beth Mugo is mourning the death of her husband ambassador Nicholas Mugo.
Mugo, 86, passed away on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital following a long illness.
“With profound sadness and sorrow, I wish to announce the death of my husband, Amb. Nicholas Mugo, that happened early this morning at the Nairobi Hospital after a long illness,” Senator Mugo said in a statement to newsrooms.
The deceased was among the first beneficiaries of the airlift scholarship program for further studies in the US that was initiated by the late Tom Mboya and Dr. Julius Kiano in collaboration with the late US President John F. Kennedy in the 1950s. He studied history and political science at Warren Wilson College in the US.
“On attainment of Kenya’s independence, Amb. Mugo was recruited to join the East African Community while still in the United States. He was among the first Kenya Africans who came back to the country to take up the responsibilities of serving the nation,” the statement added.
Mugo, a career diplomat, served as Kenya’s ambassador to France, Ethiopia, Sudan, the Vatican, and Yugoslavia, among other countries
The Standard reported that the body of ambassador Mugo will be cremated on Friday, followed by a memorial service at a later date. Mugo leaves behind his wife and four children.
