State House Director Machel Waikenda Resigns to Vie for Kiambu Senate Seat

State House aide Machel Waikenda has resigned from the government to try his luck in politics.

Waikenda, who has been serving as State House Director of Political and Intergovernmental Affairs, told Capital News that he will run for the Kiambu senate seat in the forthcoming elections.

“I confirm that I’ve resigned from State House to run for the Kiambu Senate seat,” he told Capital News.

His resignation comes a week before the February 9th deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for public officers seeking elective seats in the August 9th elections to quit.

Prior to joining State House, Waikenda served as County Executive Committee Member in charge of Youth Affairs, Sports, and Communication in the county government of Kiambu.

He is the second State House member of staff to announce their entry into politics after Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita, who is eyeing the Machakos gubernatorial seat. Waita, in an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday, said he will step down next week.

The Elections Act requires all public officers seeking elective positions to vacate office six months before the General Election.

Several Cabinet Secretaries who are eyeing various political positions in the August 9th elections are expected to quit next week. They include Ukur Yattani (Treasury), Charles Keter (Devolution), John Munyes (Petroleum), Sicily Kariuki (Water), and Simon Chelugui (Labor).
