Detectives have launched a search for two men who were caught on CCTV vandalizing Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) transformers on Saturday night.
The suspected thugs, who were armed with spanners, were destroying a key power supply unit in Makindu, Makueni County when a signal was received by detectives manning the SGR system remotely.
A contingent of officers attached to Makindu and Emali police stations was dispatched to the scene to arrest the vandals but they managed to escape into the nearby thicket upon sight of the approaching police vans.
Sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are profiling the suspects after their images were sent to the command centre by the transformers fitted with a round-the-clock surveillance system.
The investigative agency has warned members of the public that the railway is a critical national infrastructure under 24-hour surveillance and vandalizing its property attracts charges related to Economic Sabotage and Terrorism.
“Contact us on our toll free line 0800 722 203 and report anyone vandalizing railway property for action,” the DCI said.
