Four people among them three high school students died in a grisly road accident along the Kenol-Sagana Road on Saturday.
The crash occurred after a 14-seater public service vehicle collided head-on with a lorry at Area 49 in Kambiti, Murang’a county.
Confirming the incident, Maragua Police Commander Alexander Shikondi said the matatu was heading to Kenol from Sagana.
The matatu’s driver is said to have attempted to overtake a vehicle but miscalculated the distance and speed of an approaching lorry, resulting in a head-on collision.
The driver of the matatu belonging to Mark One Sacco and three students from Chogoria Girls High School in Meru were killed on the spot while scores of others were injured. The students were traveling home from school for the Christmas holiday.
The survivors were rushed to various hospitals within Murang’a County for treatment while bodies of the deceased were moved to General Kago Mortuary in Thika.
What a tragic and…
What a tragic and unnecessary loss. What can we do to avoid such senseless carnage?
You don’t miscalculate the…
You don’t miscalculate the distance to overtake / pass another vehicle. The driver was simply a very careless one who should not have been at the wheel in the first place.
But this is common in Kenya where drivers often do guesswork while on the highway. One time at night I had to confront a Mombasa bound bus driver for overtaking at a bend without having first made sure the other lane was clear. Needless to say, he fiercely reprimanded me for trying to act boss.
