Former Safaricom Employee Charged with Defrauding the Telco of Sh1.4 Million

A former Safaricom employee was on Friday arraigned in court for allegedly defrauding the telecommunications company.

Dennis Mutethia Muga is accused of tampering with Fuliza limit while working as a software engineer in the department of financial services. Fuliza is an overdraft facility that enables Safaricom subscribers to complete MPesa transactions when they have insufficient funds in their MPesa wallets.

The accused appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Monica Maroro of Kibera law courts, where he was charged with defrauding Safaricom of Sh1.4 million.

The charge sheet read that on diverse dates between October 24th and 31st this year, Muga illegally adjusted Fuliza limits of 14 Sim cards to abnormal ranges of between Sh50,000 and Sh100,000. He is then said to have used the lines through his friends to acquire credit loans totaling Sh1.4 million.

The accused denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh500,000 or a Sh1 million bond. The matter will be mentioned next month.
