Kenya has beefed up security along its borders as tension continues to escalate in neighboring Ethiopia.
Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said on Wednesday that Kenya is on high alert after the declaration of a state of emergency in Ethiopia.
He said the government is concerned about recent and unfolding events that disturb the peace and stability in neighboring countries and the greater Eastern Africa region.
Consequently, the government has tightened security along Kenyan borders and other vital areas.
“As an immediate neighbor to some of the affected countries. Kenya may be adversely impacted by the consequences of the events,” reads the statement.
Authorities have urged Kenyans to be extra vigilant and report any suspected cases of undocumented foreigners in their midst to the police.
On Tuesday, Ethiopia declared a state of emergency after fighters from the northern region of Tigray announced they were gaining territory and considering marching on the capital Addis Ababa.
Authorities in Addis Ababa asked residents to register their arms and prepare to defend their neighborhoods.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has teamed up with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) in a bid to topple Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration.
