Kenya to Receive a Cut from Kenyan Nurses Working in the UK Under Labor Deal

The government will reportedly receive a percentage of the cash earned by Kenyan nurses working in the UK following the recent labor agreement between the two countries.

During President Kenyatta’s visit to London in July, the two nations signed a bilateral agreement for collaboration in the healthcare workforce, which allows Kenyan healthcare professionals to be recruited to work in UK National Health Service (NHS).

Nation reported that the deal is similar to the one inked between Kenya and Cuba, which saw the government get 100 Cuban doctors, with the Caribbean state’s government getting a cut in return.

Sources disclosed that Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache is scheduled to lead a delegation of senior health and labor officials to finalize the guidelines of the deal. The meeting will determine how much the nurses and the government will make.

Appearing before the National Assembly’s Committee on Labor and Social Welfare last month, Labor CS Simon Chelugui said Kenya agreed to send up to 20,000 nurses to the UK to address a shortage of 62,000. About 900 Kenyan nurses currently work in the National Health Service— the UK public healthcare system.

Last month, the Ministry of Labor through the National Employment Authority (NEA) opened applications for nurses seeking to work in the UK. Interested applicants have until 5:00 pm on August 27th to register through the NEA portal (https://neaims.go.ke/).

One must be a Kenyan citizen, have a diploma or bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a recognized institution, and be registered and licensed by the Nursing Council of Kenya to qualify for the program.

They are also required to have a valid Police Clearance Certificate (Certificate of Good Conduct) and not be in paid employment either in the public or private sector in Kenya.

The first batch of nurses is expected to leave the country for the UK by October 15th this year. It is estimated that 30,000 Kenyan nurses and healthcare workers are unemployed.

  1. Government pimping her own…
Government pimping her own citizens! Modern day slavery! How sad? As our corrupt leaders and our elite thieves and immoral judges plus rank and file civil servants send their children to private and expensive schools abroad, the children of Wanjiku will be en route to be sold into modern day slavery (as nurses) to bring in money that our corrupt and immoral leaders will squander in corruption.

  2. This is so stupid to claim…
This is so stupid to claim to get a “cut”. This nurses didn’t have jobs in Kenya and when they get a chance the govt want to oppress them. Mukifika chambele, jichanueni.

  3. What a shame? At a time when…
What a shame? At a time when God’s children are being slowly and surely being released from perpetual slavery, our leaders are working very hard to put them back in chains.
Did our leaders not watch ” George Floyds” video or did they think that was a movie?
Are our leaders aware that more than 400 years of our brothers and sisters being in captivity in the Western nations is coming to an end.
This is the wrong time for any of our leaders to think of leaping the benefits of enslaving Wanjiku.
    Revelation 13:10
” He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity; He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword- Here is the patience of the saints”

Ati our leaders.Whose leaders?Say my leaders not our. These are gangsters who should FACE THE FIRING SQUAD.

  4. Since the deal is so…
Since the deal is so temporary, let the nurses have all the money. The nurses will be paying taxes anyway…Just because Cuba get’s acut from their deal with Kenya, does not mean that we follow suit.

  5. @mwororo true but remember…
@mwororo true but remember also we have many Kenyan/African nurses in the states/Australia who moved there to do other degrees but they dropped their dreams n followed enslaved themselves to be nurses just because their freds r nurses or it pays more(Brain drain) which made many drop their dreams of becoming engineers/pilots/Designers/Lawyers etc.So my point is our people have continued to enslave themselves either by bin forced or voluntarily.Shame Shame on us we the blacks person.

No nigga, shame on your bish azz for demeaning/disparaging individuals who have decide to find ways to level up.
What option do you suggest they take?Wait on Uhuruto to fix them?

      • Well, the so called “self…
Well, the so called “self-enslaved” nurses are making $8K to $9K a week working like crazy in various health facilities in the US leaving behind your engineers, lawyers, teachers biting the dust. I am in the sector I am seeing it all.
For some reason una machungu sana na Marekani – were you deported back to Kenya?

  6. @MKenya halisi, am with you…
@MKenya halisi, am with you. But the question is not whether our fellow Kenyans are doing nursing by choice or not, whether they have chosen wisely or not. It’s the philosophy behind the whole arrangement. That the government can ship citizens abroad, negotiate labor needs and receive compensation for the same as if we’re exporting coffee, tea or precious metal. It’s also worthy noting that the revenue this intelligent and hard working-brothers and sisters of ours generates, will be squandered by our greedy worthless leaders. Remember what Uhuru said without even feeling embarrassed- yet, he is the president, “Kenya looses Ksh 2billion to corruption daily”. It makes you feel like screaming, doesn’t it? “Who the hell is supposed to fix it beach!! I thought you’re the president!!!”

  7. Exactly @Mwororo…pimping…
Exactly @Mwororo…pimping it looks like. I wonder whether their take-home will be at par with the local nurses there. And what about our hospitals? Ratio will now be twice as bad. God have mercy.

    • @JustMe, there are many…
@JustMe, there are many considerations here. I think the question should be what did the government negotiate and how much are they siphoning off. The wage bands appear to be a ridiculously wide range from around £19000($25000) to £108000($147000). Maybe someone in the UK can tell us what sort of allowances they get and at what point does it become worth it after taxes. If they aren’t working in Kenya, this at least keeps their skills up to date and cash coming in. Any money any day is better than no money every day. Someone mentioned brain drain but if you are doing nothing with your acquired skills, that’s more like brain stagnation or rot and what’s the point in that. Lastly they have the ability to travel legally back and forth and will probably reinvest the money back in Kenya while overseeing their investments and keeping the scammers at bay.

      • True true. If we knew what…
True true. If we knew what their offer looks like, I know our Sukarjs in the UK will help us make sense. I only worry that our nurses will be kuhuthio…can’t get the English word…now that they’ve landed like VIPs….ati ni washamba ..with retro-skills, n hence needing ‘assimilation etc etc…. and all that affecting that other ‘vip’very important payslip.

    • ..hehe…before am smoked…
..hehe…before am smoked out…am on record on this Mwakilishi, years ago, urging GoK to act as trainers and exporters of skills, but charge good for it. The topic then was the brain-drain. Maybe they listened n am here fighting them now. Guilty as could be, maybe there’s no right or wrong…maybe an option for others….n slavery for others.

  8. UK has around 8 nurses per…
UK has around 8 nurses per 1000 people whereas Jamhuri iko na 1 per 1000 people. Maskini kusaidia tajiri.

    • That’s the ratio am talking…
That’s the ratio am talking about.. so now, going by your figures, I e nurse will be taking care of almost 2k patients. Kusaidia tajiri kwako kukichomeka kweli..or we will be able to employ more ? firefighters… ??train more nurses maybe…and just like commodities…we’ll sell all our best nurses abroad and be left with the lower quality — just like we do coffee n tea.

      • To add on that, Jamhuri is…
To add on that, Jamhuri is said to have atleast 30k jobless nurses, while having a shortage of the same in the workforce.
Though am no economist, i guess this maybe as a result of underfunding in the sector by govt., thus making counties struggle to hire enough personnel or build more facilities. Haha yeah, we’re getting back to barter trade.

  9. Govt is now the biggest pimp…
Govt is now the biggest pimp after China. Someone will challenge this legal slave trade in court.
