MP Loses Sh3.7 Million in Sham Car Importation Deal

Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka on Thursday narrated how he lost Sh3.7 million to an unscrupulous car dealer seven years ago.

Appearing before Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Carolyne Njagi, the two-time MP said he paid the money to George Gichohi Chege for the importation of an Audi Q7.

Munyaka explained that Chege, who claimed to have sold many luxury cars to MPs, was to import for him an Audi Q7 with chassis number KN59VME from the UK.

Chege, a director of Hyper Cars Limited, is charged with fraudulently obtaining Sh3.7 million from Munyaka while pretending he was in a position to import the post car for him.

MP Munyaka told the court that the accused visited him at his office at Continental House in Nairobi where he advertised his business of selling vehicles.

“I signed an agreement with Hyper Car Limited where Mr. Chege is a director. I know the accused herein very well. He is the one who sold me my first car when l was first elected to Parliament in 2013,” said Munyaka.

The politician testified that he did not have any reason to doubt Chege since he delivered his first car.

He signed a Sh4 million agreement with Hyper Cars Limited for the purchase of the vehicle and paid Sh3.3 million through RTGS and Sh400,000 in cash but the car was never delivered.

“To date, I have never received the vehicle from Mr. Chege. He also has not returned the money I paid him,” Munyaka added.

During cross-examination, Munyaka admitted he did not have proof that he made cash payments to the accused and that all financial transactions were done through Hyper Cars Limited, where Chege is a director.

The hearing continues.
