Owner of Matatu That Crushed Deputy Inspector-General of Police’s Daughter to Death Fined Sh30,000

The owner of a matatu that crushed Deputy Inspector-General of Police Edward Mbugua’s daughter to death was on Monday fined Sh35,000 or serve a three-month jail term.

Godfrey Gitonga Maina was handed the sentence by Milimani magistrate Esther Kimilu after pleading guilty to a charge of letting his unroadworthy motor vehicle registration number KBR 065B operated by KMO Sacco to be driven on the road on June 17th this year.

The driver of the Isuzu minibus Patrick Macharia Magu was on Monday charged with causing the death of Mbugua’s daughter Meline Waithera Njoroge, 25, and was released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 pending the hearing of the case.

Magu, who is accused of reversing the vehicle dangerously without due care to other road users, abandoned the minibus at the scene and fled to evade arrest. He was later traced and arrested along University Way and detained at Central police station.

Meline was crushed between two public service vehicles in Nairobi CBD on June 17th along Murang’a Lane as she crossed from Tom Mboya Street at around 8:00 pm.

A reversing KMO minibus registration number KBR 065B crushed her against a City Shuttle Sacco matatu registration number KBL 744A.

She was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in an ambulance but died hours later while receiving treatment.
