Fresh Twist in Murder Case of Mombasa-Based Dutch Tycoon as Children Implicate Mother

The murder case of Mombasa-based Dutch tycoon Herman Rouwenhorst has taken a fresh twist.

This comes after his children, aged 14 and 12, told detectives that their mother Riziki Cherono helped his suspected killers gain access into their Bamburi home on the night he was murdered.

In their statements to homicide detectives, the teenagers said their mother led three strangers into their father’s bedroom and a commotion ensued.

“Our father kept on screaming for help, as we prepared to go to their bedroom, we realized that our bedroom door had been locked from outside and we could not leave the room,” one of the children said.

Cherono later accompanied the strangers out of the apartment, according to their account.

The minors further revealed that their slain father had initiated a divorce from their mother a few months before his death, but Cherono was against the move.

“My parents were often fighting, and my dad had decided to end the 13-year-old marriage, he told us that he would no longer be living with my mother, but he would continue to take care of us,” part of their statement read.

Rouwenhorst, 55, was found lying lifeless on their bed on June 4th with his hands and legs tied using a rope, and mouth gagged.

Cherono reportedly told investigators that a six-man gang wearing hoods stormed their home in Bamburi on the fateful night.

Three of them then dragged her outside while the rest remained inside the house with her husband before ordering her to get into her husband’s car and drove off to a place near Serena Beach Hotel, where they tied her hands to the steering wheel.

Cherono was untied by passersby the next day after she cried out for help.

“I learned that the attackers had killed my husband on Friday morning when well-wishers untied me from the steering wheel,” she is quoted as saying.

Rouwenhorst reportedly emigrated to Kenya after falling in love with Cherono during a holiday. The couple had two children together.

The deceased also had three children in the Netherlands from a previous relationship.

Rouwenhorst, who hailed from Apeldoorn, owned multiple nightclubs and properties in Mombasa and Kilifi counties.

MMMmmm, not avery smart woman,to subject your kids to such trauma .That is in addition to avery badly thought out plan, which is good anyway, because the perpetrator was easy unraveled.
You would think that divorce would favor her… child support, and alimony.I guess she wanted it all.Now she probably will lose it all.
Even if she dodged the bullet so to speak, and escaped with murder, how could she live with that?Yes, Iknow some people have gone to the graves with terrible secrets ,but to most human beings the guilty of such magnitude would gnaw away on their conscience till they crack.
Now the kids are deprived of their father, whom it appears loved them, and a mother who will serve along prison time. Some with will learn athing or two from this tragedy, but some nothing-lending to another tragedy. And life goes on.We see this play out time and again.I wish it did not,but I guess we as homosapiens are still evolving, and harbor vestiges of our barbaric past.

Kenya has become a killing ground for husbands with money by their wives and the sad thing is that this women killers ultimately gets away with it. I had my brother who had settled back to Kenya from UK murdered under similar circumstance so this is personal to me. The culprit got away with it as is the case with all women who kill in Kenya

Some may think Iam crazy, and anti marriage, but that’s far from the truth. Our current model is very out dated.I dont understand why people keep on saying that marriage is hard, and one needs to work on it very hard. Why? What is the payoff? This notion of people planning to stay together till death, and hopefully death from old age is a myth, and a wishful thinking.Admittedly some attain that goal, but many suffer though it.Why?
Nobody really has to marry. In other words marriage is not for everybody. Better to be single and safe.

    My 2 cents.
Blame it on the social media.
Most ladies want to live like Kardashians, yet they don’t want to hustle…..they believe KANYAU is the new source of income.

@ Kora Kanini, you hit the nail on the head. See some of these Kenyans, especially the women, are living in third word with the life style of the first world. Media has painted the western life style as the ideal, and they tell you all you need is this” much”,but they dont tell you how to get that” much”.So people are have to device ways to get that “much”. And apparent easy way is through scams, and ladies cheapening themselves. What amess.

Comrade Maxiley… most of us are busy working, investing and all that…
What we need to start doing is saying it as it is…
Life in the western world is not easy, but full of opportunities.
Some of our comrades will paint a picture of luxury while barely making it.
        It’s time to get real.
