Government Goes After over 250,000 Kenyan Civil Servants Holding Fake Academic Papers

The government has announced plans to crack down on civil servants holding fake academic papers.

A preliminary assessment by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) revealed that three in every 10 civil servants may have used forged certificates to gain employment in public service. This translates to about 250,000 out of the 865,000 civil servants.

“This audit is a program that will start as soon as the next financial year.  If we find that you used a fake certificate to get employment in civil service, then you are liable to return what you have earned all those years, three-fold. You are also liable to criminal prosecution,” said KNQA director-general Dr. Juma Mukhwana

The agency will partner with the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to weed out the culprits.

“Our estimate is that 30 percent of the certificates are fake. It is very unfair that I sit in a university for four years, and someone else just gets a similar certificate in five minutes. You even find some cases where one has a degree purported to have been acquired long before he supposedly cleared his secondary education,” Mukhwama added.

KNQA has also developed an anonymous portal where members of the public can report those they suspect of holding fake certificates.

“You have cases where someone claims to have a university degree from outside Kenya, yet they have never owned a passport. So, how did you get your certificate from that university abroad, then? Those kinds of things where no online learning was involved. Or sometimes you have a passport, but no study visa. Same thing. How then were you there for four years with no visa?” Dr Mukhwana posed.

Mukhwana was speaking on the sidelines of a conference on research and innovation for sustainable development at Eldoret National Polytechnic.

  1. Why did it take this long to…
Why did it take this long to start smoking out those with fake credentials? We have all along known that they existed.
Employers who unknowingly hired these thieves should be exempted from punishment. But those who are found to have colluded with their employees should also be punished. Therefore those with fake papers should not drown alone.
As for returning the illgotten money back, good luck. They worked for it albeit illegally.

But the government is run by the same civil servants, or which government are you talking about? They are not going to get anywhere with this, sorry, if you are going to ask a thief to catch another one.

  3. 27% of those cases are from…
27% of those cases are from Kisii’s. Kisii people are masters in forging documents. I am willing to bet on this

  4. Civil servant degrees are…
Civil servant degrees are fake? Did you know our national anthem is also fake?
In a country that follows a foreign corrupt colonial system, fake degrees and translations are common.
The government should start by denouncing the fake translation of our national anthem that has many and obvious errors starting with the first verse.
” E e mungu nguvu yetu” -it should be translated as ” Oh God our strength” and not “Oh God of all creation”. There are many errors of translation in the whole song.
And those with real degrees could not even fix our abused national anthem.
“A nation without a language is half a nation”
If those civil servants have been able to perform at their job without those degrees, may be the degrees that people acquire have nothing to do with their job performance.
May be its time to channel our own path!!

  6. Wow! Now I clearly…
Wow! Now I clearly understand why it takes weeks, months, years, even decades to get a response from the government when you write to them. Just look at the judiciary and see how inefficient they are in dealing with cases at the court.

    SOLUTION:

Hire more qualified and efficient new employees and demand immediate termination of employees who are lazy, inefficient, and corrupt. When? Today.

    • That makes so much sense oo!…
That makes so much sense oo! You write to the civil servants wanting something, and they cannot respond since many , as reported here are fake!!!!!!lol

    • @ Ndugu Imara,you are very…
@ Ndugu Imara, you are very right in your assessment. If you hire inefficient staff, you should be ready to get subpar,or ineffective results.
I liken this to sports.Mainly olympic games, since they are around the corner.
Our perspective Olympic representatives have to score a qualifying time,or mark,to have achange of joining team Kenya. Then you have the trials that select the top 3 in very discipline to represent the country. No average athlete stands a chance to represent the country. If Kenya took, lets say the next 3,meaning the 4th,5th,and 6th to represent the country, there is no way we would hope of even a bronze;save for mere chance.
The same logic applies to every facet our lives,or society. To archive the best results, you have to hire,or apply the best…
Therefore what you see in terms of dismal productivity, is a direct result of subperforming employees.

KNQA should ask Miguna Miguna who to start with.Answer-so-called opposition leader-conman/muuaji Raila. Then waende kwa governors-kina Ngilu,Joho,Waititu,Kabogo,Mbuvi,Kingi etc.Ata mwalimu Mwai achunguzwe. No qualified economist with executive powers could sign the 2010 constitution in a country where CORRUPTION & LOANS TO LOOT are the only resources.HAKUNA.
