Jubilee Party’s bid to retain the Juja parliamentary seat has flopped.
The ruling party suffered defeat at the hands of George Koimburi of the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP), whose leader is Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
Koimburi was on Wednesday declared the winner of the Juja parliamentary by-election held on Tuesday after garnering 12,159 votes.
His closest rival Susan Waititu, who contested on a Jubilee ticket, received 5,746 votes.
Susan is the widow of the late Juja MP Francis Waititu, who died of brain cancer at MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi on February 22nd.
The by-election was marred by a low voter turnout of 18.9 percent.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday night suspended the counting of votes after chaos broke out at Mang’u tallying centre.
This was after Jubilee Party representatives led by Kiambu Governor James Nyoro alleged rigging. Tallying resumed on Wednesday morning.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said the commission will write to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) seeking prosecution of those behind the mayhem.
“The commission takes the exercise of voting very seriously; after the investigations are completed, we will write to the DPP to seek the prosecution of those found culpable,” he said.
“We are waiting for the security team to complete their investigations before issuing further instructions.”
