Four people died after they were swept away by floods in Nairobi’s Kibra area following heavy rains in the city on Thursday night.
The four were reportedly swept away while trying to cross Mutuine River from Lang’ata to Kibra slums on motorcycles.
Confirming the incident, Kibra sub-county Commissioner Gideon Ombongi said one motorbike was retrieved on Friday morning.
He indicated that a joint team has been mobilized to search and retrieve the bodies of the four victims, who are suspected to have been swept to the Nairobi dam.
Ombongi urged residents living along the river to move away to avoid more loss of lives as heavy rain is expected.
The raging floods were occasioned by the heavy downpour that continues to pound the city and many parts of the country.
On Friday, Kenya Power announced an outage in several parts of Nairobi due to floods.
The utility company said the outage was a result of flooding in the Nairobi West Substation on Thursday night.
Affected areas include Nairobi West, South C, parts of Langata Road, parts of Mbagathi Way, Dam Estate, Civil Servants Estate, Five Star Estate, parts of Lower Hill, and environs.
Poor city planning.
Poor city planning.
I got that Mr. editor. That…
I got that Mr. editor. That tongue in cheek last paragraph did sink in.
How the hell do you get the town planning so screwed up, that not only people are swept off the streets, but High power stations actually get built and flooded by rain downpours. This is what you get for voting in earring loving goons like sonko to lead the city. I know I wouldnt want to live in those nbi estates with blackouts after each rainfall and you can definitely bet you wont ever find me working any shift on that death trap of a power substation no matter how much they paid me. (BTW – these deliver power in the order of KiloVolts and Kilowatts). Am glad no one got hurt but next time may not be so lucky. I learned in 5th grade science water and power do not mix well. Bad things happen when these two forces are put together.
