Police in Kisumu are investigating the death of an employee at Kibos Sugar Factory.

Maurice Ongonyo, a bell tractor operator, is reported to have died after falling on a moving conveyor belt at the factory’s paper mill section.

Kisumu County police commander Samuel Anampiu said the incident happened at 1.30 am on Thursday.

The incident was reported to the police by Kibos Sugar Factory security officer Isaac Biwott, who claimed that the deceased fell into the moving belt, crushing him instantly.

Anampiu said investigations have commenced but the incident is currently being treated as an occupational hazard at work.

Crime scene officers visited the factory on Thursday to conduct a preliminary investigation, the police chief said.

The body of the deceased was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
