President Uhuru Confirms Attendance at Biden’s Climate Summit

President Kenyatta is among 40 world leaders who have confirmed attendance at the climate summit that will be hosted by US President Joe Biden on April 22nd and 23rd.

The two-day virtual meeting brings together Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and leaders of other nations including Prime Ministers Boris Johnson (Britain), Justin Trudeau (Canada), Narendra Modi (India), Benjamin Netanyahu (Israel), Yoshihide Suga (Japan), and Lee Hsien Loong (Singapore).

The Leaders Summit on Climate aims to galvanize efforts by the major economies to tackle the climate crisis.

The White House said the summit will underscore the urgency and the economic benefits of stronger climate action and will be a key milestone on the road to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) this November in Glasgow, Scotland.

“The Summit will also highlight examples of how enhanced climate ambition will create good-paying jobs, advance innovative technologies, and help vulnerable countries adapt to climate impacts,” the White House said.

Also attending the summit are corporate executives and global figures including Pope Francis and philanthropist Bill Gates, who are both scheduled to give speeches.

Biden said the summit will allow leaders to outline how their countries will contribute to stronger climate ambition.

Biden is expected to announce the US plans to cut its emissions 50 percent by 2030, compared to 2005 levels.

The US, the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases behind China, is responsible for about 15 percent of global emissions.
