A Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officer and two policemen have been taken into custody after they were found conducting illegal arrests in Nairobi CBD.
The three were identified as KDF Lance Corporal Ben Shiundu from the 15 Kenya Army in Mariakani, Police Corporal Cliff Ombati, who is stationed at Uhuru Camp, and Prison Warder Eugine Shivachi, who is based at Wajir GK Prison.
The suspects allegedly targeted boda boda riders, where they arrested them on false charges before demanding bribes from them.
Their scheme backfired after they flagged down a boda boda operator named Cyrus Mwangi on City Hall Way and impounded his motorcycle. They harassed him and demanded a Sh4,000 bribe to release his motorbike.
A curious onlooker alerted two uniformed police officers Reagan Akiko and Shukri Abdi, who were on patrol in the city centre.
The two police officers confronted the three, leading to a violent scuffle but they were subdued after members of the public intervened. Two handcuffs were recovered during the arrest.
Akiko and Abdi suffered serious injuries during the brawl and were treated at a health facility in the city.
KDF corporal Shiundu has since been handed over to the military police while Shivachi and Ombati remain in custody pending arraignment in court to face charges of extortion by threat, impersonation, and possession of government property.
