Four Killed, Several Injured in Mandera Bus IED Attack

At least four passengers were killed and several others wounded after a bus they were traveling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mandera County on Wednesday morning.

The 42-seater bus was headed to Mandera town from Lafey when the incident happened at Kiromey area along Mandera-Arabia Road, according to Mandera Governor Ali Roba.

Confirming the incident, North Eastern Police Commander Rono Bunei said those who sustained injuries were taken to Mandera County Referral Hospital.

Bunei said security officers were immediately dispatched to the area to pursue those behind the attack.

Local police said the death toll from the attack may increase. Witnesses said the vehicle was extensively damaged after it landed on impact.

The bus attack came a day after security officers thwarted an attempt by suspected Al-Shabaab militants to attack a police camp in Lafey.

They are said to have fired two Rocket Propelled Grenades into Border Patrol Unit camp in Sheikh Barrow area before they were repulsed. The same group is suspected to be behind the bus attack.

In recent years, Al-Shabaab has been targeting Kenya-Somalia border areas and killing innocent citizens and law enforcement officers.
