10 MPs and Senators Summoned by NCIC over By-Election Chaos

10 politicians have been summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) over the chaos witnessed during various by-elections on Thursday.

NCIC Chair Samuel Kobia says the commission will initiate the process of removal from office of the elected leaders on the grounds of contravening Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.

“These summons do not just indicate our intention to investigate and prosecute but rather also indicate the plan of the Commission to stop the unethical leaders from occupying office,” Kobia said during a media briefing on Saturday.

“We are not just seeking criminal justice we also want these leaders and others like them to be out of office forthwith once they behave in that dishonorable and shameful way.”

Those who have been summoned include Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, Senators Cleophas Malala (Kakamega), Millicent Omanga (nominated), and MPs John Walukhe (Sirisia), Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), Faisal Bader (Msambweni), Fred Kapondi (Mt Elgon), Benjamin Washiali (Mumias) and Charles Were (Kasipul).

“At the same time we have also requested the DCI as we investigate these leaders, to ensure that they can never attain a certificate of good conduct,” added Kobia.

On Friday, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said the government will be seeking to have leaders involved in violence declared unfit to hold public office.

“The reason why politicians continue to incite violence is because they have never faced the real consequences. We will deal with this menace once and for all. We can’t have leaders paying bonds of Sh10,000 and wait for the case mention after around 10 months,” said Matiang’i.
