Murdered US-Based Nurse Nicholas Njoroge's 22-Year-Old Son Arrested in Kiambu

Police have arrested 22-year-old Lawrence Simon Warunge, the prime suspect in the killing of four family members and their farmhand in Kiambaa, Kiambu County.

Lawrence is the eldest son of Nicholas Njoroge Warunge, the US-based nurse who was murdered in cold blood alongside his wife, son, nephew, and farmhand at his home in Kagongo Karura village on Tuesday.

The suspect, a student at Mount Kenya University in Thika, was nabbed from his hideout in Lower Kabete, Kiambu County on Friday night by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

“Also arrested to assist our officers with investigations is a lady believed to be his girlfriend, who sells goods at Biafra in Thika,” the DCI said in a statement.

Detectives are still searching for murder weapons and other suspects involved in the killings. Lawrence is being held at Muthaiga police station for questioning.

Njoroge (55) was hacked to death together with his wife Anne Wanjiku, their son Christian Njenga (13), nephew Maxwell Njenga (13), and farmhand James Kinyanjui (40).

The lifeless body of Njoroge was found lying within his compound on Wednesday morning while his wife, son, and nephew were found murdered inside their house. The dismembered body of their casual laborer was found in a neighboring compound.

Njoroge who arrived in the country on December 4th to spend the Christmas holiday with his family was stabbed 34 times and his throat slit.

Kiambu police commander Ali Nuno said the killers appear to have been on an elimination mission given that nothing was stolen from the home.

He added that detectives will also revisit past unsolved murder incidents that happened in the family, and maybe related to the latest murder.

Nuno indicated that this was the fifth incident in the Warunge family with the first involving Allan Warunge, a brother to Njoroge.

Allan was reportedly shot for the first time and confined to a wheelchair before he was killed in 2016. The second victim was Kenneth Mungai Warunge who was murdered alongside his niece thereafter.

“Kinyanjui Kamau, a family member was also killed in unclear circumstances,” said Nuno.

So sad a child is the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of family members! What did he gain in all this madness?? Very sad and unfortunate indeed!

This kid is cursed from Heaven to the pit of hell! I say this with a lot of heartfelt pain!

This family has a long history of murders! Relatives, family, and “friends” killing one another over some unresolved issues – maybe land ownership, inheritance, jealousy, etc!

It has now come full circle with five family members dead! Hopefully the arrested son will give light to what he knows! It has been a long time coming and now it has happened!

    RIP!

I hope to God that they wrong…What would make a child to be so angry at their parent?

  5. 34 stabs are an indication…
34 stabs are an indication of contempt and hatred on the murderer. This was emotionally motivated. If Njoroge had moved to the states and left his family in Kenya, the emotions didn’t connect!

  7. Part of this is not…
Part of this is not understanding our own kids. We raise them by not been there. Social media is where they get counseling services, too much TV. We are too busy working and trying to live like Kardashians and we forget the basics of raising kids. Fathers are no longer fathers, social media is. Mothers are nowadays partial mothers…..I am not trying to justify the crime, but we need to do better as parents.

    • Something went wrong…
Something went wrong somewhere is the way we raise our children now days. There seem to be a big disconnect. So often we read about teenagers having orgies, binge drinking, teenage pregnancies, and largely not listening to their elders.I dare say non of this was there when people who are now in their 90s were teenagers. Not saying they were saints, but heinous crimes perpetrated by kids was unheard of.
Fast forward to today as you see a vast contrast?I think we as asociety have broken down, eroded moral pillars that used to guide communities. We no longer hold,”it takes a village to raise a child” seriously anymore.
If we want to see less and less of these teenage delinquencies,as as a society have to consciously come up with better parenting. We all agree that agood number of adults are not good role models.
Uniformity is no longer considered COOL,in infringes on individual freedom. But when the individual harms the society,we collectively condemn him or her. Social norms, and mores cannot only be effective when voluntarily observed by society, but laws can force us to conform. But these laws have to be enforced to be effective.Which bring us to our leaders, and those who elect them.
