The Jubilee Party has invited applications from those interested in vying for the Nairobi Governor’s seat on the governing party’s ticket.
The move is an indication that the President Kenyatta-led political outfit is keen on retaining the position that fell vacant following the impeachment of Mike Sonko.
Sonko was axed on four charges including gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, violation of national laws, and lack of mental capacity to run the county government.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced the Nairobi gubernatorial by-election will be held on February 18th, 2021.
IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati in a gazette notice asked political parties intending to participate in the election to submit the names of the persons contesting in their party primaries and the date of the nominations on or before December 28th.
Parties intending to present candidates through direct nominations were ordered to submit the list of persons nominated on or before January 11th.
“A public officer who intends to contest in the by-election shall resign from public office within seven (7) days of the declaration of the vacancy,” read the notice.
IEBC set January 18th and 19th as the dates for the nomination of political party candidates and independent candidates for the by-election.
On Monday, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura was sworn in as acting Governor pending the by-election.
