Family Says 97 Percent of Joe Nyagah’s Lungs Was Destroyed by COVID-19

Former Cabinet Minister Joseph Nyagah who died on December 11th was on Saturday laid to rest in Mbeere South, Embu County.

Nyagah succumbed to COVID-19 complications while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital aged 72.

Speaking during his funeral, his brother Norman Nyagah revealed how COVID-19 completely damaged the deceased’s lungs.

Norman told mourners that an X-Ray done on his brother’s chest after he was moved from COVID-19 intensive care unit (ICU) to the general ICU showed his lungs were 97 percent destroyed.

“Joe had recovered from COVID and that is why he was moved to ICU…My family continued to see him and encourage him but the lungs were completely destroyed,” Norman said.

“The doctors gave the family a choice…either he lives in a ventilator or the family thinks otherwise,” he added.

He added that the family was ready to take Joe for specialized treatment abroad.

“I told the doctors that I am affiliated to over 500 hospitals worldwide…I can actually take Joe to Chennai in India where we can do a bilateral lung transplant and he can survive.”

But as he talked to doctors, Joe suffered cardiac arrest followed by another a few hours later but the two attacks lasted for only a few minutes.

He sought the help of Nairobi Anglican Bishop Joel Waweru who went to the hospital to see and pray for Joe.

The following morning, Norman and his wife went to the hospital where they were informed that Joe passed away after suffering two more heart attacks.

“I did two things after he died. I shut his eyes and mouth and I was satisfied that I had done God’s will,” he said.

He was buried next to his grandfather’s grave facing the hills of Mbeere as per his wishes.
