The Kenyan medical fraternity has raised alarm following the death of seven doctors in six days.
On Saturday, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announced the death of Dr. Hudson Alumera. Alumera, a periodontal surgeon, succumbed to Covid-19 complications while undergoing treatment on Saturday.
“Dr. Hudson Alumera–a periodontal surgeon was a teacher, mentor, friend & icon to the medical & dental fraternity. Fare thee well daktari,” the union tweeted.
He joined the list of seven specialists who died from Covid-19 between Monday and Saturday. The others are Dr. Emarah Ashraf, Dr. Vladimir Schukin, Dr. Hudson Inyangala, Dr. Robert Ayisi, Dr. Jackline Njoroge, and Dr. Faith Kanjiru Mbuba.
KMPDU has urged doctors to abstain from duties where the work environment is unsafe.
“National and County Governments must bear the cost of treatment for COVID-19 for all frontline health care workers and the public,” the union said in a statement on Saturday.
“To the Government of Kenya, the welfare occupational safety and health of frontline health care workers is non-negotiable moving forward.”
The union has also called for a Special National Advisory Council meeting on Sunday to discuss the safety of all frontline healthcare workers.
