Second Madaraka Express Train Introduced After Increased Passenger Demand

The Kenya Railways is on Thursday set to add a second Madaraka Express commuter train on the Nairobi-Mombasa route.

The additional train will operate in the afternoon, departing Nairobi at 2:15 pm daily, and arrive in Mombasa Mombasa at 7:30 pm while that from Mombasa will leave at 2:15 pm and arrive in the capital at 7:20 pm.

Through a statement on Wednesday, Kenya Railways said the move was due to increased passenger demand

“As from 1st October 2020, we will have an additional afternoon express train to and from Nairobi and Mombasa. Get on board!” Kenya Railways noted.

Commuter services on the route resumed on July 15th after a three-month hiatus occasioned by the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country.

Since then Kenya Railways has been operating one train, which leaves Nairobi at 8:00 am daily and arrives in Mombasa at 12:45 pm while another departs the coastal city at the same time.

The services resumed under strict Covid-19 containment measures formulated by the Kenya Railways in collaboration with the Health Ministry.

The train carries a maximum of 600 passengers in 10 coaches, which is 50 percent of its capacity to facilitate social distancing.

All travelers are required to wear facemasks, undergo temperature screening, and wash hands at the entrance of the train’s termini. There is a coach set aside for passengers who exhibit Covid-19 symptoms during the trip.
