Former Trade Minister Mukhisa Kituyi Joins 2022 Presidential Race

Former Cabinet Minister Mukhisa Kituyi has joined the race to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022.

Kituyi, who currently serves as the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), declared his presidential bid through his secretariat.

In a media briefing on Sunday, his secretariat said the former Trade minister has what it takes to transform the country’s economy and tame corruption.

“We have looked at Kituyi’s credentials and achievements and decided that he is the best person to lift our economy and wage war on graft, he has been the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and therefore best placed to become Kenya’s next president,” the secretariat said.

The team further poked holes in the hustler vs dynasty debate which appears to be shaping the 2022 succession politics, terming it as empty rhetoric.

“These hustler vs dynasty politics are not about economic growth, they will not put food on your table or pay fees for your kids, you need a leader who will make Kenya greater, Dr. Kituyi is that man for you,” they said.

At the same time, the secretariat told off those claiming that Kituyi lacks financial power to mount a serious presidential campaign.

“Those who are saying Dr. Mukhisa has no money, let them know even those with money will not feed you, or give their money to you,” the team added.

Kituyi recently expressed his intentions to run for president when his current term with the UN expires next year.

He is Kenya’s highest-ranking diplomat in the UN and served as the Minister of Trade during retired President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
