Kenyan Woman Arrested for Selling Newborn Baby for Sh1,000 to Stranger

Police have arrested a Kenyan woman for allegedly selling her newborn baby to a stranger for Sh1,000.

The woman, Winrose Mumbe, is said to have sold the infant to Tina Mulinge three months ago after delivering him at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

After the transaction, Winrose traveled back home in Kitui County leaving the child with Tina.

On Wednesday, Tina went to the same hospital where the child was born to seek clinic services, and nurses at the facility were able to identify the baby. They realized it was the same child they helped deliver a few months ago.

But they raised alarm after the mother’s details failed to match those submitted by Winrose when she gave birth a few months ago.

Reports indicate that Tina went missing for nine months only to return to her husband claiming she had given birth. The couple has been raising as their own until Tina’s arrest on Wednesday.

“For nine months, Mulinge has been lying to her husband that she was expectant, she even went to the hospital on her alleged due date and that is when she came back home with the baby,” Machakos Sub-County Children’s officer Emily Kimanzi said.

In her defense, Winrose said she sold the baby because her husband had ordered her to procure an abortion, something she could not live with. Both suspects were arrested at booked to Machakos Police Station pending arraignment in court.

Police also launched investigations to establish whether Tina got her elder child by similar means.
