Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has tested positive for Covid-19, according to his attorney.
Waititu, who is facing corruption charges, failed to appear in court on Monday with his lawyer John Swaka telling magistrate Thomas Nzioka that his client was in 14-day self-isolation after he contracted the infection.
“We are not ready to proceed. Waititu has been unwell since last week and I am informed that he exhibited symptoms and was directed to take the test which confirmed the position of COVID-19. Before he can mingle up with the public he was asked to isolate himself,” Swaka said.
The defense team served the prosecution with a medical report from Lancet Laboratory showing Waititu had tested positive for Covid-19.
As a result, the graft against Waititu and his co-accused was adjourned after the prosecution said they were satisfied with the medical report. The case will be mentioned on October 21st.
The prosecution had lined up four witnesses to testify against the accused persons on Monday.
Waititu, his wife Susan Ndungu, and eight other suspects were charged with several graft-related counts in connection with a Sh580 million irregular tender at Kiambu County government.
Waititu was impeached by the Kiambu County Assembly early this year on grounds of gross violation of the Constitution and public finance management act; crimes under the national law; and gross misconduct/abuse of office.
