14 University of Nairobi (UoN) employees and their dependants have tested positive for Covid-19.
The university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama said the 14 include 10 members of staff and four family members.
Further to this, the UoN community has lost four members to the disease among them three active workers and one retired employee.
“It is a difficult period for our Country and UoN community. I convey my condolences to the affected families and pray to the almighty God to give them comfort and strength to overcome the pain and loss,” Prof. Kiama said in a statement.
“I also wish a quick recovery to all those who have tested positive. I urge all staff and students to continue exercising caution by observing the guidelines issued by the government through the Ministry of Health from time to time.”
Prof. Kiama had earlier ruled out the reopening of the institution in September citing the rising cases of Covid-19 and the fact that Nairobi is the epicenter of the pandemic in the country.
“Nairobi is the most affected part of the country and the university sits right at the center of the city. It will not be prudent to reopen,” he said on Wednesday.
