UK-Based Prestigious Durham School Opens International Academy in Nairobi

UK-based independent boarding and day school, Durham School has become the latest international school to enter the Kenyan market.

Durham, one of the oldest schools in Britain, on Tuesday announced it has launched an international academy in Nairobi.

The 600-year-old institution said it will offer British Curriculum starting with nursery entry (ages two to six) from January 2021.

“We look forward to welcoming a diverse community of children with a range of cultural, and educational backgrounds, languages, talents and abilities to our brand new school in January 2021,” said Sue Small, Headteacher-elect of the school.

The school located in the leafy suburb of Thigiri joins a growing list of foreign institutions that have invested in private education in Kenya.

The school targets children of wealthy Kenyans as well as expatriates working for multinationals, foreign governments and global institutions in Kenya.

Reacting to the opening of the school, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, said: “As a former student of History at Durham University, I am delighted Durham will be opening a school in Nairobi in January 2021.”

“Education links are a key part of the UK and Kenya’s relationship, and it’s fantastic to see Durham School being the first British school to open a branch in East Africa,” she added.

Other international schools operating in Kenya include German School, International School of Kenya, Potterhouse School, Braeburn, Rosslyn Academy, Sabis, Greensteds, Brookhouse, Kenton and St Andrews Turi.

These schools’ annual fees range from Sh200,000 to Sh600,000 for day scholars and up to Sh1.7 million for boarders.

politicians are not the only wealthy kenyans we have.fortunately.

  1. Rich Kenyans and the corrupt…
Rich Kenyans and the corrupt will pay an arm and a leg for their kids education

  2. N others keep telling u…
N others keep telling u African is a shit hole country yet such schools r nowhere in uk/state/australia.Africa is the place to go n to be sio majuu maslavery working year ass off buying houses full of 30 yrs morgage mtalipa mpaka mshike akili za kurudi nyumbani kwenyu but sadly many comes back old, fragile waiting to die.Return home wenye wako majuu when ur strong n enjoy ur last life.Yes Africa kuna issues here n there but if u have something small u will live a beta less stress life than majuu mafake maheaven.Anyway my guys in majuu u know i love you n that’s why i keep telling yuu east or west home is the best.Lets build kenya not other foreign nations.

    • As you say, lets build Kenya…
As you say, lets build Kenya not other foreign nations and that is why this school curriculum should be checked to make sure they are not teaching our kids European history and geography. Learning how a street in London came to be will not help Kenyans build the nation. This is basically colonization coming back to find willing clients who then get the prime jobs because of their social status and sell us off to the highest bidder..the European and Chinese.

    • @Mkenya Halisi, Relax! you…
@Mkenya Halisi, Relax! you can pass your point without sounding soo bitter. Kwani how many times did they deny you a visa?

    • @halisi – anyone can live…
@halisi – anyone can live any where they want in this world. Folks chose to live else where for specific reasons. Kenya is a nice country but it is not the safest place on earth to live.

You are also paying some rent where you are living in Kenya. So it is normal for folks to take up mortgages to build equity and have ownership pride of their homes. You sound like you don’t understand that part of basic economics. Those who live in Kenya have huge high interest mortgages too.

You are also paying costly school fees in a U.K. school build school in Kenya where only the wealth can afford to send their kids to school. If that is not the case, your kids are having to attend a dilapidated school where lessons are held under a tree!

Those who get old in foreign countries and decide to return to Kenya have a right to do so; is that correct? Enjoying life is simply living a decent life wherever you are in the world.

It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to live a good life, unless you are a thief killing others for their sweat!

So your rumbling on and on makes no sense. You sound quite bitter and a person starved for opportunities to travel a little bit and see the world!

  3. Home is where the heart is…
Home is where the heart is. Let people live wherever they want. It’s called diversity.
