Senator James Orengo’s Wife Betty Murungi Appointed as Professor at the University of London

Kenyan attorney and human rights activist Betty Murungi has been appointed as a Professor of Practice at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

In her new role, Murungi, who is the wife of Siaya Senator James Orengo, will contribute to Gender studies at the school that was founded in 1916.

“The Centre for Gender Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Kaari Betty Murungi as Professor of Practice. Kaari Murungi is an expert in transitional justice processes, women’s human rights, gender, constitutionalism, and governance,” SOAS said in a statement.

Reacting to her latest appointment, Muringi noted: “I’m absolutely delighted at this opportunity to join the SOAS community. For the last twenty years, my work has focused on advancing gender justice in international criminal justice mechanisms and in peace agreements in conflict and post-conflict situations.”

“I am particularly drawn to SOAS’s interdisciplinary approach and focus on seeking solutions to global issues through ideas and scholarship,” she added.

In 2018, Murungi was appointed as a board member of the Commission of Inquiry on 2018 Protests in Occupied Palestinian Territory.

She was named to the commission by the President of the United Nations Human Rights Council Ambassador Vojislav Šuc.
