Emurua-Dikirr MP Johanna Ngeno is counting losses amounting to over Sh4 million after his 22 dairy cows died after consuming contaminated feed.
The Holstein Friesian cattle are said to have dropped dead one after the other shortly after they were fed with the mineral product reportedly imported from Ireland.
“The cows began shivering, foaming in the mouth and running wild before dropping dead one after the other, just five minutes after taking the minerals salt,” Fredrick Mutai, the manager of MP Ngeno’s farm said.
“We immediately called a veterinary doctor who injected the animals in an effort to save them, but there was little he could do.”
Another worker Luke Evans, said, “We followed keenly the instructions given by the product supplier. He told us the ration for each cow is 200 grams per day mixed with other general animal feeds. That is what exactly what we did.”
Speaking to a local daily, MP Ngeno said he purchased the animal product from an agro-vet in Nakuru town.
“We bought the new feed recently and we were giving it to our livestock for the first time. We gave it first to 22 cows after which we planned to give the rest. Our farm has about 90 cows,” he stated.
Ngeno has since invited officers from Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to investigate the matter as he vowed to take legal action against the store for selling sub-standard feeds to him.
Ngeno said the 10 bags of the mineral product he bought had an expiry date of January 28th, 2022.
“I will take legal action against them for selling uncertified feeds and also for selling to me feeds that they knew to be poisonous. They have caused me grave devastation on my investment,” he added.
