Kenyan Sanda Ojiambo Appointed as Head of United Nations Global Impact

Kenyan Sanda Ojiambo has been named as the new Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

Sanda, who presently serves as Head of Sustainable Business and Social Impact at Safaricom was appointed to the position by UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Her appointment takes effect on June 17th, 2020.

She will succeed Denmark national Lise Kingo who has headed UNGC, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, since 2015. Sanda has held the Head of Sustainable Business and Social Impact post at Safaricom since 2010.

“Sanda has been instrumental in leading our team that focuses on Sustainable Business, Shared Value, Corporate Social Investment, and Technology for Development. She has also played a major role in ensuring integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into our business operations,”     Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said.

Sanda holds a Master of Arts in Public Policy from the University of Minnesota, the US, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Development from McGill University, Canada.

“Sanda brings 20 years of experience to lead the Global Compact in its next phase to mobilize a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders and bring the full weight of the private sector to achieve the SDGs,” said Guterres.

UNGC, which was founded in 2000, is a voluntary corporate strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.
