The government has banned the movement of people into and out Eastleigh estate in Nairobi and Mombasa’s Old Town due to the high rate of Covid-19 infections in the two areas.
Speaking during a media briefing at Afya House, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the restriction takes effect at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 6th, for the next 15 days.
“You can go and shop in the area. What you cannot do is leave the area to go to another area. Specific geographical locations will be clarified by the Ministry of Interior Coordination of the National Government. Public transportation is not allowed to go into these areas,” Kagwe noted.
This comes after the Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed 47 new cases of Covid-19, the highest single-day increase since the first case of the virus was recorded in the country on March 13th.
The new cases bring the total number of Covid-19 infections in Kenya to 582. Out of the 47 new cases, 32 were registered in Mombasa, 11 in Nairobi, 2 in Busia, and one in Kiambu and Kwale counties.
CS Kagwe said a majority of the cases in Mombasa and Nairobi are from Old Town and Eastleigh estates.
“The situation in those areas has become of serious concern to us,” said Kagwe.
At the same time, Kagwe announced the passing of two more Covid-19 patients, raising the tally of fatalities to 26. The two patients succumbed to the disease at their homes in Mombasa.
The number of recoveries also increased to 190 after eight additional patients were discharged from the hospital after defeating the bug.
