Uhuru Names General Robert Kibochi as the New Chief of Defense Forces

President Kenyatta has appointed General Robert Kibochi as the new Chief of Defense Forces.

Kibochi was appointed to the position on Thursday, April 30th, to replace General Samson Jefwa Mwathethe who is retiring after having headed the Kenyan military since 2015.

Kibochi, who has been serving as the Deputy Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), will officially assume the role on May 11th, 2020.

“Following the impending retirement of Gen. Mwathethe, I have promoted the following officers: – Lt General Robert Kibochi to General; Major General Levi Mghalu to Lt. General; and Brigadier Jimson Mutai to Major General,” said Uhuru in a statement.

“Further to these promotions and in line with the recommendation by the Defence Council, I have today made the following appointments: – Gen. Robert Kibochi to Chief of Defence Forces designate; Lt. Gen. Levi Mghalu to Vice Chief of Defence Forces designate, and Maj. Gen. Jimson Mutai to Commander of the Kenya Navy designate. The officers are expected to assume office under their new positions, on May 11, 2020.”

The 60-year-old Kibochi has been in the military since 1979 and holds a masters degree in Arts in International Studies, a masters degree in Computer-Based Information Systems, Bachelors degree (Technology in Communication and Electronics Engineering), and is presently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Peace and Conflict Management.

His decorations include Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH) and Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), among others.
