Kenya has confirmed 12 additional cases of Covid-19, raising the total number of infections in the country to 355.

In a media briefing on Sunday, Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr. Rashid Aman said eight of the new cases were recorded in Nairobi while four are from Mombasa.

The eight cases registered in Nairobi are spread across seven estates including Kibra (2), Karen (1), Dandora (1), Eastleigh (1), Kasarani (1), South B (1) and Umoja (1).

In Mombasa, the four cases are from Mvita Kuze (1), Mishomoroni (1), Mvita-Bondeni (1), and Barsheba (1).

CAS Aman indicated that the 12 are all Kenyan nationals and only three have a recent history of travel to neighboring Somalia. The 12 patients are aged between 14 and 60 years.

At the same time, eight more Covid-19 patients were discharged from the hospital after they recovered from the bug, bringing the tally of recoveries to 106 while the number of fatalities stands at 14.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus has directed the immediate commencement of testing of all truck drivers at all border crossing points.

Speaking at the same briefing, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha announced the closure of schools has been extended for 30 more days.

“At this point, the government has not decided to postpone the KCPE and KCSE examinations. Let our children enjoy the last week on holiday,” said Magoha.

Kenya’s low death rate from covid-19 is puzzling/is a mystery. The figures are likely to be incomplete. Kenya’s testing rate is small for the size of its population and there could be a large tally of ‘missing’ deaths among people who died outside the major cities. The country could be carrying out too little testing and the wananchi should not be trapped into false sense of confidence. However Uhuro’s measures are already having the desired effect of flattening the epidemic curve. The lockdown has also given the gov. time to prepare for a possible surge in future cases, if any!
